Healthy Schools Campaign is pleased to join hundreds of other groups (PDF) around the county calling for a more balanced farm bill -- one that would make real progress toward supporting healthy eating.
A report titled "Seeking Balance in U.S. Farm and Food Policy" (PDF) was developed under the auspices of the Farm and Food Policy Project, a collaboration of rural, family farm, conservation, anti-hunger, nutrition, faith-based, public health and other groups. The report underscores the important role that the farm policy has on so many aspects of our society, including health and wellness, the environment and rural communities. Approximately 300 organizations, HSC among them, are offering concrete, innovative solutions for a healthier, more sustainable farm and food system.
We support the overall recommendations of the report because we understand that an agriculture policy that stresses healthy sustainable grown food is important for providing healthy food to our children both in and out of school. In addition, the report calls for funding for programs that provide fruits and vegetables in schools, implement wellness policies and expand nutrition education.
"Seeking Balance in U.S. Farm and Food Policy" was released last week during a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Audio comments and panelist statements are available here.
