It was good see the recent report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that showed strong public support for recess. The survey found that the American public wants schools to support healthy lifestyles in general and recess in particular. In addition, 70 percent of parents disagree with the reduction or elimination of recess.
This survey demonstrating strong public support for recess comes on the heels of a report by the Center for Public Education which documents that many schools are cutting out recess -- and that the elimination of recess is taking place more frequently in schools that serve low-income minority students, a topic I wrote about in a September blog, “It’s More Than Just Recess”.
HSC is working with parent leaders and our community partners to advocate for recess and speak up about the important role that it plays in children’s health and learning.
