We are glad to see that the compromise version of the economic stimulus bill reached by House and Senate leaders seems, for schools, to have more good news than not. While details are still emerging, the compromise seems to have added an additional $10 billion for schools in the state fiscal stabilization fund. So while these funds are not directly marked for school renovation and modernization, they may be used for that purpose.
If this is correct, it will be important for us all to help state leaders recognize the major role that school repair and modernization play in providing healthier school environments for American schoolchildren -- especially as half of this money will need to be allocated this fiscal year.
Many thanks to the advocates around the U.S. who sent letters and made phone calls letting our elected leaders know that school repair is an important part of economic recovery and a strong, sustainable future for our nation.
In a related note, the economic stimulus deal also includes $25 billion in school construction bonds for new construction.
We’ll continue to share updates as we learn more of the details about what the economic stimulus bill will mean for schools.
