HSC is thrilled to welcome Southwest Airlines as our official travel partner for Cooking up Change! Through this sponsorship, Southwest is making it possible for HSC and the students of Cooking up Change to make connections nationwide -- like flying to Washington, DC to present the healthy school lunch they design to elected leaders.
“That’s why the program really appealed to us -- it’s a chance for Southwest to help kids reach that goal: to go to Congress” and share their message, said Patty Kryscha, manager of corporate community affairs for Southwest.
She explained that Cooking up Change helps students develop the valuable -- and rare -- gifts of leadership, teamwork and confidence that prepare them not only to speak before groups and share their perspective with policymakers but also to succeed in college or in culinary careers.
“Being a team player will carry them through life,” she said.
While Cooking up Change gives student chefs an opportunity to grow, it’s also part of a national movement to improve children’s opportunities to learn by improving their access to good, nutritious meals that fuel learning.
Supporting Cooking up Change “made sense from the education standpoint because good nutrition is so important to learning,” Kryscha explained. “We know it’s important for health, but it’s also so important for learning and education.”
Healthy students are better prepared to learn: it’s a message that Southwest is helping HSC and the student chefs of Cooking up Change carry nationwide.
