DeShaun Isaiah and LaMore Wise, Winners of Cooking up Change St. Louis
We are excited to announce the winning team from the most recent Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest!
DeShaun Isaiah and LaMore Wise, from Clyde C. Miller Academy in St. Louis, came in first place in the cooking competition held on Feb. 10. Isaiah and Wise based their main course on another dish they like and thought could be improved, taco salad. The dish they created was an “upside-down taco salad” with low fat ground beef, low fat cheese, lettuce and spices, along with the chips on top so they would stay crunchy. Their meal also featured Mexican rice and a real fruit parfait with vanilla yogurt.
One of the judges said that the best part about the meal was "the creativity and nutritional experience that the students achieved."
Another judge was so impressed by the students' skills and insight that she said she would like to "have students to work with in the Food Services Department so we can receive imput."
The winning meal will be served in their school in March and will replace the taco pie currently served there.
DeShaun Isaiah and LaMore Wise will take their winning meal to Washington, D.C. in May to compete in the Cooking up Change National Healthy Cooking Contest finals against the winning teams from other cities including Chicago, Winston-Salem, Jacksonville, and Denver as well as a team from the online component of the competition.
Kudos to all of the Clyde C. Miller Academy culinary students who participated in this Cooking up Change contest and good luck to the winning team in Washington D.C.!
