"The ONLY downfall is the frosting"? I don't think so! There is 1-1/2 Tablespoon RED FOOD COLORING! suggestion: leave out the red dye. add some beet juice to the frosting to naturally dye the frosting a beautiful shade of pink!

The beet technique will not work in the presence of baking soda. The pH needs to be acidic for beets to stay red or you will get an ugly brown color. To maintain the color, omit the baking soda, and use 2tsp of baking powder. (You could also add cream of tartar for insurance, but in my experience that gives cakes a weird and unpleasant sour taste.)
