Next week, six teams of high school students from across the U.S. will gather in Washington, DC to compete in the national finals of the Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest and take part in a Capitol Hill briefing on the future of school food. A school lunch designed by students will also be served in the House of Representatives cafeteria!
Please join these remarkable students in speaking up for healthy school food!
Cooking up Change challenges high school students to create a school lunch that meets high nutrition standards on a tight budget. But the students have access to a key resource that many school food service staff lack: full kitchens with adequate equipment for cooking a meal. Many school kitchens only have the equipment to heat food, not cook from scratch.
Now, Congress is considering action that would help bring proper kitchen equipment, plus professional development for food service staff, to more schools.
Please urge your senators and representative to support healthy school meals! Click here to send a letter inviting them to attend the briefing on Capitol Hill, try the student-designed meal in their own cafeteria and support action that would help bring proper kitchen equipment and training to more schools.
Thank you for being part of this effort. Stay posted for updates from the student teams next week in DC!
