Earlier this year, HSC teamed up with Chicago Public Schools and the Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to present Heroes for Healthy Schools, a series focusing attention on the role everyone can play in ensuring that all children are able to succeed in school and live healthy lives. We invited our readers across the country to nominate individuals they see making a difference for kids’ health at school and in the community. Today we are happy to spotlight one of the many Heroes for Healthy Schools you wrote to tell us about!
DuShura Peppers
"Granville T. Woods Math & Science Academy would like to nominate DuShura Peppers as our Healthy School Hero! As the lunchroom manager for the past four years, serving nutritious meals to our PK-8 students for breakfast, lunch, and snack has been her main priority.
Ms. Peppers continually strives to set high nutritional standards by offering green and orange, non starchy vegetables each day. In addition, whole grains and reduced fat salad dressings are always offered in substitution to high fat counterparts.
With the help of Ms. Peppers, our school offers a unique environment to nourish and nutritionally educate both students and families. Through community partnerships and school-wide initiatives, Woods students are impacted in and out of school. Ms. Peppers inspires healthy dietary habits among students, parents, and school staff that will hopefully cultivate lifelong approaches to being healthy!"
