We are always amazed by the phenomenal student chefs who participate in Cooking up Change. By creating an appealing and great-tasting meal that meets high nutrition standards on a tight budget, high school students bring the message of healthy school food to their peers, administrators and their community to show that change can happen when we all do our part to move it along.
Now, the West Coast joins the movement to transform school food! Yesterday, HSC joined local host Kid Healthy to present the first Cooking up Change contest in California! Thanks to Kid Healthy and Northgate Markets, the healthy cooking contest was presented in Santa Ana for the first time for the region. Teams of high school students from Santa Ana's High School Inc. Academies at Valley High School's culinary arts program competed to create a healthy school meal on a tight budget, meeting high standards of nutrition, taste, presentation and originality.

The winners from the Santa Ana contest will join teams of student chefs from Chicago, Denver, and St. Louis. In the weeks ahead, HSC will work wtih local hosts to present contests in Jacksonville and Winston-Salem as well! Be sure to follow the Cooking up Change section of HSC’s blog and stay tuned for results from the California competition!
It's great to have a program like cooking up change to promote healthy eating and creativity on presentation and originality.
