Parents United for Healthy Schools brings together parents in Chicago’s Latino and African-American communities to promote health and wellness in school. With knowledge and skills developed through training and shared experiences, parents form school wellness teams to support healthy changes in their school and champion food and fitness. Last year, 17 of the Chicago schools that were recognized for meeting national HealthierUS School Challenge standards for nutrition and physical activity were supported by Parents United wellness teams.
Karina Macedo, an exemplary parent leader at Greene Elementary, summarizes Parents United’s efforts this way: “We are sharing our experiences, sharing all we know. We can help our families and community. Parents United has all the tools we need to learn and help our kids.”
